I am wondering
Where does our desire for tradition come from
This is an interesting one
What do these certain little
Practices
Moments
Rituals
Mean to YOU
Where did they come from
Why do they matter
What does it give to you
We are going to a friends house
For Thanksgiving
We are grateful
She is cooking what she loves to cook
Chocolate Pecan Pie being one of them
When I shared that with Riley
She cried…
What about OUR Chocolate Pecan Pie
It’s a TRADITION!
Really?
I had no idea
That us making that pie
For the last 3 years
Meant so much to her
But it does
It reminds her of a moment
Watching The Macy’s Day Parade
A commercial came on
She and her dad
Begged and pleaded for that
Nasty corn syrup pie
Something I would NEVER make
I relented
I resisted
Until…
I went to the market
Bought the ingredients
Reluctantly prepared it
Worried about their health
Loudly proclaiming my fears
Of what it would do to their bodies
When it was done
And then…
I served
Just one slice
No more for any of us
And then…
I served another
That’s it
No more
And then…
I served another
Soon it was completely gone
Truth is
I ate most of it
Back to the store I went
To make another
During that time
We all felt
Seen
Heard
Accepted
We laughed at one another
As we sat at the table together
Sharing a corn syrup pie
With pecans
And chocolate
The moment was silly
Wonderful
Lovely
A tradition was born
In the heart of my daughter
So I am off to the store today
To make a pie
That was NOT in my plans
But that is ok
Breaking my plan for the day
Is more important then staying on course
It is now part of our
Tradition
Which brings us all
Together
In this moment
Remembering those times
Dreaming of more
Moments to come
I guess
For now
The wondering
Has ended
As I wish you
Your family
A wonderful Thanksgiving Day
Embracing one another
The many moments
Amazing traditions
Surrounding the entire family
Filling us all with blessings
Hope
Love
And turkey!
