There is a light
That ignites the world
When our children play
When they dream
When they create
When they desire

That light gets brighter
As these dreams are
Witnessed by another

In that moment
Of being a part
Of a child’s heart
All of life
Opens up and says… YES

It says…
Come join me
Wake up
Be a part
Find you in this moment
Participate

How often
Do we stop
Notice
Listen
To their calling
And participate in their
Imaginations
In their invitation
To be free

How often do we
Ignore
Push away
Get too busy
To play
Due to our own
Insecurities
Worries
Judgments

Riley wanted a fort
Built of heavy wooden pallets
For over a year
She has dreamed
Planned
Wanted
Prepared

I have said
Yes
But
Later

She has asked
She has waited
I have listened
I have waited

It dawned on me
She is learning to WAIT
From me
She is learning to
NOT go after what she wants
From me
She is learning to
Put her dreams to the side
From me
She is learning that yes
Doesn’t always mean yes
It means
Wait
Wait
Wait

Until
It just doesn’t happen

Because LIFE
The doing
The running
The worrying
Has precedence
Over your dreams

Well… Last weekend
I stood staring at our now
Dirty large collection of pallets
Taking up way too much space

And I heard the calling of her heart
One more time

But this time I listened
Deeper
I felt her desire
Deeper
I was stirred by a deeper recognition
I was moved by an obviously paralyzing
Inaction

And I thought to myself

I have no idea how to build this thing
I need someone else to build it for me
I asked around
I received a NO
I paused
Threatened inaction one more time

Until I heard the internal word…ENOUGH
And I began to BUILD

The hammer hit my thumb
It frickin hurt like hell
It was 100 degrees
Sweat poured down my face and arms
There were splinters
I got pricked
I was cursing
Walked a way many times
Questioned myself
I came back
I hit my thumb
Again

Until…it was BUILT

Together we painted
Added a pink shag rug
To top it off

But of course

And stood back and
Noticed
A dream come true

We listened to our hearts sing
Received praise for the work we had accomplished
Rejoiced in one another’s company
And stared in awe at the sparkle
Emanating from one another’s eyes

For we showed up
We saw it through
And now we enjoy
Today
This moment
This dream
This expression of a child’s imagination
This connection of heart
This… YES… To the light
That ignites the world

Ignites the home
The heart
The desire
In us all
