He was loving soccer this year
Until
He had a game and toward the end
He played goalie
When scored upon
He melted down
HARD
Afterward
Declaring his IMMENSE DISLIKE
For the game of soccer
Swearing to never play again
For several weeks
He went to practice and was
FINE
But when it came to game time
He was NOT
I assumed
The problem
Must have been
That he was scored upon
And no matter how many times we spoke about it
He was just
NOT FINE
So, last week we did an emotional clearing process
Me knowing that we were finally going to
Clear this goalie issue
BUT…
That is not what came up for him
Instead…
The issue was that during that game
He was kicked in the leg
Fell to the ground
And NOBODY CAME
To see if he was ok
He said
I felt so sad
I never want to play again where people don’t care
He spoke out loud how he felt
Said how he felt about the boy who kicked him
Understood that it was an accident
Received new resources
On how to handle it
Next time
At the end he said…
I feel great
I feel strong
I feel happy
That weekend he had a game
He jumped up when it was time to go
Which was refreshing
Ran right onto the field
Without hesitation
That was wonderful
I figured he was good
Until…
He was position -ed to play goalie
UGH!
And got scored on
UGH…UGH!
I held my breath
Looked down
Was afraid to see the reaction
And then…
I got the courage
To look
Gazing right at him
Noticing the deep breath
He paused to take
YES
He is doing it
Yes, Yes
He gave me the thumbs up
Yes, Yes, Yes!
He went back to the game
With a huge grin
Gracing his face
Afterward he said…
I felt nervous
But I took a deep breath in and remembered
I am kind
I am strong
I am courageous
I am confident
And I was fine
SCORE!!!
