Second grade was coming
He knew who he wanted as a teacher
He spoke about it all summer long
As if putting out a prayer
For what he wanted for himself
The notice came
Within you will discover
Who your teacher will be
He did not care about his friends
Whether they would be in his class
He just wanted HER
This particular teacher
He sat in front of the computer
Closing his eyes
While whispering the words
Please, please, please
He opened the message
There it was
The answer
He got what he wanted
SHE would be his teacher
There was such excitement
Joy showered us all
As he did a little dance
While howling to the moon
His sister then declared
Oh no, not her
The other teacher is so much better
That is who I had
I know so much more than you
I have already been there
He was unwavering
In his conviction
To which he affirmed
I don’t care what you think
I know she is great
I wanted her
And I got her
The dance continued
On the first day of school
An announcement was made
If you earn 20 points
Based upon you showing
Good character qualities in school
You will get a lunch with her
While choosing 2 of your closest friends
To join
He was ecstatic
With the possibility
Proclaiming
Once again his intention
I WILL make it happen
I was concerned
He was seated next
To his best friend
Which means
Talk, talk, talk
Poke, poke, poke
Trouble, trouble, trouble
Said my distressed head
I warned his teacher
I suggested that she move him
She said no
Let’s give him a chance
To figure this out
Let’s give him a chance
To be guided
Let’s give him a chance
To become aware of his behavior
Let’s give him a chance
To decide for himself
Who he wants to be
What he wants to gain
How he wants to show up
And so she did
Last week
He came home
On fire
Walking on air
With so much self pride
Honor
Excitement
Confidence
For he had earned his 20 points
The next morning
He alone
Wanted to prepare
His VICTORY lunch
And so he did
He alone
Decided to wear a nice pair of pants
For her
And so he did
He alone packed her a chocolate surprise
To say thank you
He alone walked from my car
Ready to receive the most wonderful
Reward you can offer a child
Time
Attention
Opportunity
Acknowledgment
From someone special
It is not about
Treats
Toys
Trips
That is not what they want
Though they may protest
It to be so
It is truly about offering
Yourself
Completely
To the powerful intent
Of showing up for another
It is all they want
Crave
Desire
Need
It takes a few extra minutes
To be present
Aware
Mindful
It takes a a bit more effort
To show up
Care
Notice
Connect
It takes a desire to make a difference
In someone else’s life
Which makes a massive difference
To us all
This is a memory
That will forever be in my son’s
Heart, mind and spirit
I am so grateful to be lead
Supported
Honored
By such wisdom
The wisdom of my son
To follow his heart
Intuition
Knowing
The wisdom of a teacher
To follow her knowledge
Vision
Trusting
For in the presence of
Unconditional love
For self and others
Miracles happen
Lives are changed
And life can be lived
From a much sweeter
Expansive place
Thank You
Ms. Cunningham
You’re the BEST
