I was sound asleep
Snuggled in tight
Warm in my bed
It was late
It was midnight
I was halfway to tomorrow
When he broke the rules
He left his bed
He broke curfew

I only later found out
He couldn’t sleep
He put a blanket
At the bottom of his door
Doing as his older sister does
Making sure the light
From within
Wouldn’t seep out into the darkness
Making sure
My slumber wasn’t disturbed

Until…

He was ready to share
What he had been up to
In the middle of the night
While he couldn’t sleep
While his mind raced
While he was creating
Sculpting
Expressing
His love for me

I was sound asleep
Snuggled in tight
Warm in my bed
It was late
It was midnight
When he tip toed into my room
Quietly bending
Over the side of my bed
Gently whispering

Hey mom
I made something for you
Wanna see

I was startled
I jolted up
I was stunned
I was confused
As I blindly
Stared at the outline
Of his body
Holding an object
That I could not discern
But knew
From his tone
His gentleness
His beaming smile
That there was a gem
Waiting to behold

I couldn’t sleep
I was thinking of you
I love you
Wanna see

How could I resist
How could I be bothered
How could I make him wrong
For not being in his bed
For not obeying the rules
For not doing as he is told

How could I resist
Allowing him to be him
Following his heart
Sharing it with me

What a gift
In the letting go
In the letting be
In letting in
The moment
The love that is on offer
When we simply
Meet one another
In the moment
From our hearts

Even when
We are abruptly woken
From our warm
Cozy slumber
To be met with a warmth
Greater than our bed!

I love you buddy
Thank you for being
You…
